San Francisco, Nayarit (San Pancho)

San Francisco—affectionately known as San Pancho—is a charming coastal town in the state of Nayarit, located along Mexico’s central Pacific coast, just 50 kilometers north of Puerto Vallarta on Highway 200.

Rich in history and culture, this region was originally home to the indigenous Cora and Huichol peoples, whose presence and traditions still influence the area today. As Spanish settlers established nearby ports in San Blas and Puerto Vallarta, the region slowly grew, remaining largely rural and connected to vast estates overseen by landowners and Franciscan missions.

Following Mexico’s independence, and especially after the land reforms of 1931, the area that now includes San Pancho and neighboring Sayulita was placed under communal ejido ownership, shaping the close-knit, community-driven spirit that defines the town today.

For many years, San Pancho thrived on simple livelihoods such as fishing and the cultivation of mangoes and tropical fruits. In the 1970s, then-President Luis Echeverría brought new attention to the town by establishing a family retreat here, along with a vision of creating a self-sufficient community. This initiative led to the development of key infrastructure, including a hospital and the (short-lived) Universidad del Tercer Mundo.

Today, San Pancho blends its rich heritage with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere—making it a unique destination where history, culture, and coastal beauty come together.
